When Not to Follow the Crowd

I was watching an exciting historical series on Netflix entitled "Vikings: Valhalla".

Of course, it kept my adrenaline spiked but I could not help seeing the similarities from then and today. The warring between the Vikings and England is well known. But unfortunately, the warring between the Vikings amongst themselves was just as brutal and unjust.

They slaughtered each other over different beliefs. One side believed in the old ways and customs. The other side believed that Christianity was the only true religion. Dissimilar beliefs sanctioned the massacre of thousands. Does this sound familiar?

I kept thinking, "We are doing it again. Nothing has changed in history; just sophisticated weaponry." As I watched the human drama unfold in technicolor, I saw how the loss of loved ones affected the main characters. This made me empathize with all the families of the soldiers in war zones today; the Middle East and Russia/Ukraine. I realized that the greed for power and control was the justification then, as it is now. And I am sure there are many more war zones throughout the world; it's just not visible in the media so we are not aware of what is happening.

The "power" to defend life and liberty is vital to humanity. Defend is the key word, for no person or country has the right to forcibly take "control" of another. There will always be good and evil until we learn self-control and respect of other's differing viewpoints.

Hugh Prather, a writer and counselor, said, "There is no such thing as you're wrong, or I'm wrong, we have two different opinions, and that's not wrong." I love this quote because it's true. And opinions are just that, opinions. They are not facts.

When I think of the division in our own country, we are much like the Vikings, fighting amongst ourselves for power and control. How many of you know husband and wives, mothers and children, or siblings who have stopped talking and divorced themselves from their relationship due to politics? How about lifelong friends who have disconnected over difference of opinions? I have felt the hurtful sting of being dismissed and shunned because of my unexpressed beliefs leveled at me because of my association to others. I have family and friends on both sides of the coin.

I do not choose to love someone because of their beliefs. I choose to love someone by their character and how they demonstrate their love. I do have strong convictions: Love, Kindness and Respect. That is what I taught my son, and I choose to live by example as I follow my own moral compass.

Sometimes doing the right thing is not popular. Sometimes we need to go within, and ask our higher mind, "What is the higher road that leads to the greater good of all?" If you choose to listen to your own wisdom rather than someone else or allow some outer source to manipulate and tell you what to think, you will know what is true and what is false; and walk your own path with conviction.
