True Story: Two months ago, I was traveling home on a very turbulent flight that lasted forty minutes. All around me people were talking, laughing, and drinking to calm their nerves. I decided to practice what I preach, Self-Hypnosis.
I closed my eyes, took three deep breaths and counted down from ten to one saying, "relax" between each number. I soon felt a wave of warmth on my body, and calmness in my heart. I knew with certainty we would be alright.
However, the woman sitting in my row in the window seat was freaking out. She wasn't screaming but I could visibly see her heart beating fiercely while her body shook with goosebumps up and down her arms. Her teeth and fists were clenched. She was very pale with tears streaming down her face as she opened and closed the window shade.
I knew I had to do something to ease her fear and create a state of peace in her mind. I was sitting on the aisle seat but didn't care that I had to physically reach over the man in the middle seat to touch this woman's arm. I said, "Honey, open your eyes and look at me." She did for a second and began shaking again. Once again, I said more firmly, "Open your eyes and look at me." When our eyes met, I told her to breathe with me by taking three deep breaths and counting down from ten down to one. (Just like I did a few moments before). When I saw her breathing slowed down, I asked her to imagine she had an energy slinky between her hands while she brought her hands together and away in a fanning motion without touching. Once she established a calming rhythmic motion, I told her this was her own loving healing energy and to transfer this wonderful feeling to her heart by placing her hands there. I watched how her breathing became relaxed, and for the first time she smiled as she opened her eyes. Even though the plane ride was still crazy turbulent, she wasn't. I told her she will remember this vital yet easy self-hypnosis tool to help and teach someone else in need.
What I didn't realize while helping this fellow passenger was the silence in the cabin. The only sound was my own voice. Afterwards, I chuckled to myself thinking, "the whole plane must have been hypnotized to feel calmness in this crisis. When we landed the whole plane erupted into thundering applause for the pilot.
